Stemettes, the network to encourage girls to take up science careers, celebrated its first birthday on 15th February 2014 at Telefonica Digital and O2 Think Big in London. The 1st Birthday party, attended by 100 people, saw workshops from Flux Dance Theatre teaching about forces through movement; a STEM television workshop with TV producers as research for their latest little STEM girl character; radiographer, Brooke Roberts, who uses medical scans to design patterns for knitwear and clothing; and Takita Takita who merges fashion, costume, design and maths. All of this set to a backdrop of sandwiches and celebratory cake to feed the thousands and science-based party games.
Launched at Google Campus on 12th February 2013, the Stemettes network, founded by Anne-Marie Imafidon, has achieved significant milestones in just one year, from hosting 9 events for 550+ girls; running a mini hack at the BETT conference where we met the voice of Siri to Anne Marie being invited to speak at a round table at 10 Downing Street. Stemettes has seen a 22% increase in girls wanting to work in Science and an 18% increase in girls who knew women working in Technology after one of their hackathons.
